fish stock
So I got really behind in posting paleo culinary school stuff for you guys after I did the beef & chicken stocks a few weeks ago. Turns out real culinary school got in the way. ;)
Anyway, fish stock is actually fish fumet—a fumet just being a much lighter preparation. It’s lighter because, well, unless you’d like to just go drink ocean water, you don’t want fishy...

Tri Training: Swim & Run
Since I still can’t afford the pool pass (2 more weeks!), I subbed 30 minutes of power yoga for the swim. Not only is it full body & works up quite a sweat, but it also loosened my ridiculously tight hamstrings enough that I actually could run.
30 Minute Swim (subbed 30 minutes of power yoga)
15 Minute Run (actual time 14.18)
Dripping sweat when...
Dinner: Paleo Chili
Organic onions, garlic, tomato paste, tomatoes, grassfed ground beef, homemade beef stock, cumin, red pepper flakes, cilantro.
Cook. Stir. Devour.
Seriously, this is amazing. I’ve eaten some pretty spectacular things in culinary school, but the paleo stuff at home is just the best.
Also: I’m really paying for the few bites of baked goods earlier. I had...

Tri Training: Brick
40 Minute Bike (actual time 38:36)
10 Minute Run (actual time 9:28)
So. I survived my first brick. That’s a whole new kind of tired on the legs, though. Hurts so good! :)
Baking Today: chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, & biscuits. Now I just have to find someone to give them to… I’ve already learned some sciency baking stuff in just...

Tri Training: Swim & Run
It was supposed to be 30 minutes in the water & 45 minutes on the pavement. I traded that for 90 minutes on the yoga mat. I haven’t had a paycheck yet, so I can’t afford the pool pass yet, & believe me, 90 minutes of astanga power vinyasa will kick your ass. (Or your asana, as our teacher says.) It’s a great start to the week.

You’re lookin’ at the newest production line cook for Universal Orlando Resort. (Well, you’re not actually looking at me, but that’s how the saying goes, so pretend.)
Thanks so very much for all your sweet well-wishes. You guys are the best!

Things I Ate Today: fattened goose liver (aka foie gras), veal sweetbreads (aka thymus glands), calves liver.
Things I Did Not Eat Today: Anything “normal”.
Things That Were Surprisingly Really Yummy: All the above.
Some days at culinary school are more adventurous than others. :)

Tri Training Day ??: Strength
After 9 days off for being sick as a dog (including missing 2 days of culinary school), I finally psyched myself up last night to get back in the saddle this morning. I still can’t breathe properly, but it felt soooooo good to be using my muscles again.
repeat entire circuit 3x, 60 sec rest between rounds

Anonymous asked: most painful kitchen injury?
Anonymous asked: Hi Cavegirl, I am relatively new to Paleo and still discovering new foods! I made the burgers with rutabaga fries and eggplant. It was my first time having both eggplant and rutabaga. Enjoyed them both!!! Can you give me some other ideas of what to do with them? Also, for the fries, you don't mention a cook time at 450. Should they be softened in the microwave prior to baking? Thank you...

food safety at home →
According to the CDC, quite a few of the foodborne illness outbreaks every year actually occur at home, not at restaurants. Luckily, they’ve provided this list of the most important steps you can take to help protect yourself & your family.
Anonymous asked: hey miss modern cave girl... I am really eager to try your paleo poptarts! i'm wondering though, are these a must-eat-the-same-day kind of thing, or does the avocado keep once baked in the poptart?
Go Bears!
Oh wait…
Ok, fine, go Giants!
And for the love of all that’s holy, let the commercials not suck this year (they pretty much did last year).
(By the way, Bears win anyway…Brian Urlacher…mmhmm.)

I, personally, fine #8 to be pretty crucial in life. We make mistakes - all of us, but beating ourselves up over and over for past grievances will get us no where.

Tri Training Day 3: Bike + Strength
45 Minutes - Bike
My bike isn’t really designed for this sort of riding, but at this point I just want to log the miles & work the muscles. The biggest battle was just talking myself into getting up at 4:30 in the morning. I won that one, but it was pretty close there for a while. The actual ride was fine, I just got lost around the lakes in the...

FEBRUARY GOALS:
1. Stick to triathlon training plan. This is a big deal because I tend to let stress & life get in the way of any training plan & then give up on it.
2. Astanga power vinyasa every Sunday. I do this now, but it’s important to me so I’m putting it down.
3. Eat all paleo. Cheat meal with my 3yr-old niece on Thursday nights & tastings at school are...

triathlon training starts tomorrow...
That may be the scariest sentence I’ve ever written. But there’s a sprint tri here on my birthday (ok, the day before, but close enough) & I think it would be awesome to do as my gift to myself.
Wish me luck!
